Foreign Medical Program (FMP)

📖 2 min read 📅 May 21, 2026 By VetNav

Nobody really talks about what would happen if you moved overseas. There are many reasons veterans would like to move or stay overseas after leaving. Whether you're like me and got into a serious relationship while you were stationed overseas, you could have family that lives overseas, and you may want to live with them. You could have a job offer somewhere. Maybe you just wanted to take time to explore the world.

In any case, you're in luck. It can be very difficult to navigate being overseas, and having most of your resources feel like they're being cut off from you. Today, we're going to be discussing the Foreign Medical Program (FMP).

It was pretty easy to apply to. The first thing you'll need is a service-connected disability; more on that in another blog. Then you have to apply to the VA health care system, which was just a simple phone call for me. Afterwards, I just applied for the FMP online through the VA website. This link should help you get to where you need to go: https://www.va.gov/health-care/foreign-medical-program/

After I applied, it took several months to get a letter in the mail for what disabilities I would be covered for. So if you're wondering where it's been, and it's only been a few weeks, please be patient; it takes a little while.

After you get approved, they want you to send receipts. I just take pictures of mine through their online portal. However, you can also email, fax, or mail them too. Then afterwards, the VA should reimburse you if all goes well. These are definitely one of the few benefits that make me feel heard by the VA while being overseas. These are just one of many benefits that I cover in my free benefits guide. I try to cover as many benefits that I think may help veterans as possible. I also know firsthand how unique situations can make you feel isolated; this is the place you can feel connected again. I opened a new free chatroom for veterans in these kinds of situations. Please feel free to check out any one of the many tools on the website https://www.vet-nav.com to find out what you've earned, and what you can apply to, given your circumstances!
